About SMS QR codes

An SMS code holds a phone number and, optionally, a message. Scanning it opens the messaging app with the number and text in place, ready to send. It is a common way to run keyword sign-ups, such as texting JOIN to a short code, or to offer a tap-to-text line on a shop window.

The message is only sent when the person taps send, so the code cannot text anyone on its own. The code is built in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and nothing is saved between visits.

It is a static code: the content is encoded in the pattern itself, so it never expires, has no scan limit, and needs no account.

Questions

Should I include the country code?

Yes, in the form +1 555 0134. A number with the country code works for anyone who scans it, including visitors from abroad.

Can I leave the message empty?

Yes. The code then opens a blank message to your number and the person writes their own text.

Does it work with iMessage and WhatsApp?

The code opens the phone’s default SMS app, which on iPhone is Messages. It does not target WhatsApp or other chat apps.
